Of books, films, and appreciated efforts

Like OF LOVE AND SHADOWS and EVA LUNA, Isabel Allende’s DAUGHTER OF FORTUNE has once again captured me with its vivid portrayal of characters. True to her style, Allende started the novel with the main character, Eliza Sommers, opening her past to the readers. Left outside the house of the Sommer’s in Chile, Eliza was adopted by Rose, a spinster and her two elder brothers, and was brought up to live a life of elegance under the English tradition. I am so engrossed with this book that no matter how tired I am at night, I can’t help myself but read a chapter or two before I sleep. I hope I can finish reading it before the Holy Week vacation ends. Then I can start with Tess of D’Urbervilles which I bought more than a year ago!

The Notebook was really a tearjerker, just like A Walk to Remember. This weekend, I plan to watch Jude Law’s Alfie and Robin Williams’ The Final Cut. I’ll post my reactions about the said films next week.

I felt proud of myself today. I was told that one author liked the way I edited his manuscript. All this time, I taught he will not give in to my suggestions and he will stand by his old references. But I was surprised to see an entire chapter deleted from his book. Maybe he does not want to do research anymore to update the said chapter. But I’m glad he did it, because if not, I don’t think his book will make it to the set deadline. I really am delighted to be with the tertiary department now. In my almost three years with the company, this is the first time my efforts have been appreciated, and it really feels good.
